A Jamestown landmark since 1964, by the saloon’s own count.
The Rawhide has held its stretch of Highway 108 for sixty years, and the room says so: pine board walls, a wagon wheel and a steer skull over the bar, rope lettering spelling the name above the stemware, a jukebox in the corner, and a dance floor big enough that the sign out front puts music before food.
- 1964
- The year the saloon puts on itself, twice over. “A Jamestown landmark since 1964” ran in the masthead of every page of its own website, and the last version of that site signed off “Country Saloon Since 1964.”
- The sign
- Four words on a lit board over the door — COCKTAILS, LIVE MUSIC, a star, POOL — with a steer skull at each end. It is still the clearest statement of what the room is for.
- Jim
- A mounted buck with a cigarette in his mouth, up on the boards above the bar. “Come meet our smokin’ buck & take a pic,” the saloon wrote when it introduced him. People still do.
- The floor
- Swing classes ran on Monday nights in February 2018, ten dollars a head, taught by Christina and friends — “how to look fantastic out on the dance floor.” Tribute nights, ladies’ nights and touring shows have used the same floor since.
- Today
- Open every day. Locals happy hour on Mondays, the pool tournament on Tuesdays, five-dollar margaritas and line dancing on Wednesdays, karaoke at half seven on Thursdays, and a band or a DJ at the weekend — the month's flyer goes up on the Instagram, under the longhorn.
A full bar, and they mean it
“We know the meaning of full bar,” the saloon wrote on its own site. The list below is the one it published — twelve whiskies, a dozen mixed drinks and the taps and bottles, including a cider pressed a few miles up the road.
Parties and bands who want the floor
“Enjoy our country setting. Our saloon is available for parties and performances” — the saloon’s own words for the room. It has taken swing classes, tribute nights, ladies’ nights and touring shows on the same floor. Bands used to have their own way in: a page headed “Wanna perform at the Hide?” Call the saloon and ask for the date.
